medifast reviews

What is Medifast?

Medifast is a medically-supervised weight loss plan that consists of shakes of various flavors that provide full nutrition while enabling the body to burn fat and calories. As many Medifast diet reviews will explain, this particular plan is proven to be very effective, as individuals typically lose 2 – 4 pounds each week, depending on the specific plan. Although Medifast is intended for morbidly obese individuals, under a doctor’s supervision, those who only have a few pounds can be successful at safely losing weight on this plan.

Depending on the specific plan, some Medifast diets consist of shakes and regular food, which is a great way to teach those with unhealthy eating habits proper nutrition. Dieters can still lose weight while consuming delicious but healthy foods while on this weight loss plan.

Medifast Review Breakdown: How does Medifast work?

For anyone interested in trying out Medifast, the plan is pretty simple. It works by encouraging the body to enter a fat-burning mode, which is accomplished by consuming specially-prepared meal replacements, and other approved foods.

In addition to shakes, the meal replacements can come in the form of bars, as well. Dieters can choose from more than 70 meal replacement options, and it doesn’t matter if they’re craving something savory, sweet, spicy, etc., there is something to satisfy everyone’s cravings. Dieters have the ability to eat delicious meal replacements while losing a great deal of weight in the process.

One good thing about the meal replacements is that there is no guesswork involved. The meal replacements contain optimal nutrition, so attempting to put together an appropriate meal isn’t necessary.

The Medifast plan works with an easy three-phase approach. Phase 1 is the weight loss stage in which dieters will lose weight quickly. This phase lasts as long as it takes for the dieter to reach their goal weight. Phase 2 is the 6-week transition phase, which enables dieters to slowly transition from a strict dieting in the weight loss stage, to a slightly more lax way of eating. Phase 3 is the lifelong maintenance plan, which helps individuals to maintain their weight loss for a lifetime with minimal regaining of weight.

Variety of Medifast weight loss plans

Depending on a dieters goals and specific needs, there are 4 different plans to choose from. First, there is the 5 & 1 weight loss program. This program is the most popular choice, and it consists of 6 separate meals each day, every 2 – 3 hours.

There will be 5 Medifast meals as well as one “lean & green meal.” The “lean and green” meal consists of protein and vegetables. The protein can be any kind of lean meat, such as chicken, steak, pork or fish. The vegetables will consist of a variety of choices, like broccoli, cabbage, salads, green beans and much more.

There is also the 5, 2 & 2 plan. This plan is for those seeking a diet with a bit more flexibility but one that still adheres to the Medifast program. It consists of 5 meal replacements, 2 healthy snacks as well as 2 “lean & green” meals.

Next, there is the 4, 2 & 1 plan. This includes 4 delicious meal replacements, 2 “lean and green” meals as well as one healthy snack. Once dieters have reached their goal weight, there is the 3-2-1 maintenance plan. This plan assists dieters with maintaining their weight loss once their goal weight has been achieved.

Foods allowed on Medifast

In addition to the meal replacements, dieters are able to consume 5 – 7 ounces of lean protein each day, 3 servings of vegetables, as well as plan-approved fats. There is even the ability to enjoy snacks, as long as they’re on the approved list. With the convenient Medifast cookbooks, dieters can prepare mouth-watering meals that will make them feel as if they’re on a regular eating plan instead of a weight loss plan. For those who love dessert, this dynamic plans allows many wonderful choices, as long as they are plan-approved. Choose from chocolate brownies, delectable smoothies and more.

The sky is the limit when it comes to what users can eat on the Medifast plan. There is the option to eat pre-packaged oatmeal, eggs, pancakes, cereal, puddings, and much more. There is no reason for a dieter to feel deprived, because whatever food is desired, it is likely available with Medifast. There are even hearty choices like garlic mashed potatoes, sloppy joe meals, chili, macaroni & cheese and much more.

  1. I lost 60 lbs on medifast. I liked most the products and the ones I didn’t like were easy to send back or trade with other people on the program. The best part of the program was getting my health coach! I’m off the medifast products now but still work with my health coach on maintaining my weight! The variety is the best and there are tons of shake flavors… chocolate peanut butter and oreo are the best!

  2. The cost of medifast is obscene. They just raised their prices AGAIN to $ 19.50 for a box or 7 servings ( plus overcharged shipping). $ 19.50 for 7 packets of hot chocolate? Their executives have seen obscene salaries and they are exploiting overweight peoples struggles to obtain a healthy weight. When I run through my current supply of medifast I am done forever, you can do more by exercise, eating small healthy snacks and avoiding pop and junk food. They could have had long term success but greed will destroy this company

I lost 35 pounds on medifast and my husband lost 40. We have continued to maintain it for over a year. It is all about using what you learned to make better decisions.

I paid $875.00 for this plan just last year!!! And THEN the cost of food every week on top of it. I guess the $875.00 was just a ticket to walk in and buy food?!?! I did lose 20 lbs. in 9 weeks – very good; but I received no counseling, no interest at all from the two women at the center. They spent ALL their time on the computer before and after getting you your food. Though I stuck 100% to the plan, I can’t even remember those two women’s names – that’s how much interaction was involved at that center.

  5. I have been on Medifast for about 18 months and have lost 25lbs, most of which came off in the first 6 months. Yes, it’s expensive. But besides an almost guarantee that you WILL lose weight, here are some other benefits I got: 1) Took all the thought out of what I should eat and made it so mindless and easy that I stopped obsessing about what I was going to eat – that was the first lesson. 2)Taught me to eat small portions a lot more often during the day, instead of 3 largish meals and I found, to my surprise, that small portions (100-150 calories per meal, 6 or 7 per day)that small portions were just as good if I had the discipline to wait 20-30 min before I went for seconds, and finally, 3) taught me a lot about what the best daily intake of carbohydrates, fat and protein should be. So all in all, I am happy with the results. I do spend about $200 to $300 per month – but if I didn’t spend it on Medifast, it would be going on regular groceries and restaurants, so I don’t really worry about the expense.

    • Hi Nina,
