Hello Fresh Review – A Full Overview & Breakdown

More and more, healthcare consumers are realizing the importance of preventative healthcare and a healthy lifestyle. Diet is an essential part of that overall strategy. It is not easy to balance homemade meals, healthy ingredients and a busy life, though. What if someone were to hand you everything you needed each day to make a good, nutritious meal on the fly?

Hello Fresh Reviews

Companies like Hello Fresh are bringing home cooking back into the limelight by doing just that. This is a different service than what you see celebrities who want to lose weight raving about during your favorite TV show or that infomercials discuss in the middle of the night.

Hello Fresh does the legwork, so their customers can enjoy making food that is good for them without the hassle of learning new recipes or shopping. Find out more about this innovative service in this comprehensive Hello Fresh review.

What is Hello Fresh?

Hello Fresh is an international food company that creates meal-kits with everything you need to cook at home. They don’t offer processed foods like you see with other subscription food services. Hello Fresh creates what they call “recipe boxes.” Their chefs design new recipes that are easy to prepare from fresh ingredients. The staff takes each recipe and gathers the ingredients, then boxes it all up to mail to subscribers.

Hello Fresh customers get everything they need to cook their own meal in the box along with complete instructions. They can have the benefit of fresh, healthy food without struggling to create meal plans or waiting in line at the grocery store. The recipes are more adventurous than what you might try on your own. For example, how about coconut-crusted chicken fingers with garlic green beans and spiced sweet potato fries? You have all the ingredients to make that meal at your fingertips.

What Does a Recipe Box Look Like?

Hello Fresh has partners that work with in-house chefs to collect ingredients from local suppliers. Each package comes with step-by-step curated recipes, so all customers do is open the box, gather up the ingredients and follow the directions to make each dish.

The meals typically are arraigned using a meals x people formula. The 3×2 pack offers three meals with food enough for two people. The 3×4 product serves three meals for four people. The company offers food options for classic dishes, meals to appease the vegetarian and family boxes when there is more than one person at the dinner table.3×2 pack offers three meals with food enough for two people. It is a system that works well for them. Since the first branch of Hello Fresh opened in 2011, the company has grown to service three countries and over 500,000 subscribers. They reportedly deliver over 7.2 million meals a month.

Hello Fresh Reviews & Results

HelloFresh offers positive testimonials from customers who use the service like Courtney Stephens who calls it nothing short of awesome. On other reputable sites, the reviews are a mixed bag.

C. Shaughnessy states that the service is ideal for her family compared to similar companies. She was able to provide home cooked meals without much food waste. Using Hello Fresh allowed her to diversify their food options, as well. With recipes coming in all the time, the family could try new dishes and explore a variety of flavor combinations. She enjoyed practicing the new cooking techniques offered by the Hello Fresh chefs, as well.

That same reviewer shared concerns that the ingredients provided with each recipe were not always correct. Even with this issue, she felt the service added to her family’s quality of lifestyle.

A few others complaints had nothing to do with the quality of the product, but the administration of their account. They explain that they were billed for two separate subscriptions when they only ordered one. These customers had a difficult time getting anyone to help him resolve the problem, too. (We were recently informed that these issues were eventually resolve.)

Cal, another user, said that the recipes were more difficult to master than expected. The company represents them as easy and quick, but in reality, they are time-consuming. On top of that, he felt the portions were small and unrealistic. Hello Fresh did respond to his complaint by explaining that their system is set up to let the subscriber pick meals that are easy to make by selecting the “quick recipe” option. The portions are balanced nutritionally, so while they might seem small, they are a healthy per person size.

While Kara B was pleased with the service and the quality of the food, she warned others that you needed to use up the ingredients quickly or they go to waste. A three meal box really needed to be gone within the three days. One thing she liked about the company was the diverse food choices. Subscribing to Hello Fresh allows you to experience foods that you might otherwise miss.

Pros and Cons – What Many Hello Fresh Reviews don’t Mention

Pros

  • If you are a person looking to expand your food options with dishes that you would normally only see on a menu, Hello Fresh gives you that opportunity.
  • The ingredients are fresh, in fact, so fresh that if you don’t use them quickly, you might lose them.
  • The service makes home cooking easier to do and more time efficient. You don’t spend hours digging through cookbooks or Googling recipes, the Hello Fresh Chefs create new dishes regularly. All the ingredients come to your door, too, so there is no need to worry about shopping or missing a vital ingredient.
  • Hello Fresh packages all the ingredients in their own clear bag, so it is easy to sort through them and see what you need for each recipe.
  • They provide subscribers with enough control over their plans to skip a week when necessary. You have until 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday to hold a week’s shipment.
  • The recipes come on cards that you can keep for future use. Each card includes the level of difficulty, the cooking time and the tools necessary to complete the meal.
  • Hello Fresh tells you exactly how many calories you get with each meal. It averages between 500 to 800.
  • The company offers a vegetarian only plan that costs even less.

Cons

  • The minimum order for Hello Fresh serves two people.
  • A box designed to feed three may not have as much food as you expect. This is both a pro and con, though. Their goal is to introduce people to healthy portion sizes, but they may mean you eat less than normal.
  • The name suggests that all the food is fresh, but some items do come in a can. For example, you might get canned beans for a casserole recipe.
  • Hello Fresh has a smaller and less diverse menu than other companies that offer a similar service.

FAQs

How Does the Food Stay Fresh In Transit?

HelloFresh is very particular about the packaging and quality of their products. They package their meals in ice-packed, insulated, Styrofoam cooler boxes. Ingredients such as meat and fish are packaged in vacuum-sealed bags for ultimate freshness. Other ingredients such as produce and “pantry ingredients” are arranged by meals and packaged in color-coded bags.

Do I Need to Purchase Additional Ingredients?

HelloFresh supplies you with all of the ingredients needed to cook the meals. However, the basic household ingredients such as salt, pepper, sugar, good cooking oil and butter are not included, so you will have to purchase that separately.

How Many Calories Does HelloFresh Meals Have?

According to HelloFresh, their meals contain anywhere from 500-800 calories each.

Can I Customize My Meal Options?

Yes you can! You can choose your own meals from HelloFresh selections, as well as customize and choose your meals in advance for the upcoming week. Just simply login to your account, locate and click on the “Meal Choice” tab and choose your meal options.

Are Hello Fresh Meals Easy to Prepare & Cook?

You don’t have to be an excellent cook or have any prior cooking experience to prepare and cook HelloFresh meals. Their meal recipes are very simple to follow; they are detailed and come with step-by-step instructions that are very straight forward. The biggest issue that some users may have is “time”. Some meals are more time consuming than others. However, I must say, as someone who loves to cook, you must have patience when trying something new.

I have tried Hello Fresh 3 times, twice last year and once this year. Last year after receiving spoiled meat in both shipments I cancelled my subscription. This year, they called me and told me everything is shipped in refrigerated UPS trucks. I just met the UPS shipment and asked him if his truck is refrigerated. You guessed it, they lied to me. The truck is not refrigerated. Having said that, I first cut open the chicken packet to make sure it was ok, but it’s not. It’s spoiled. Both beef packets seem ok, but the chicken will be discarded and replaced with my own chicken. I think they may consider sending you everything except the meat for their meals, cut the price to reflect that and just tell you what meat to buy for your upcoming order. Except for the spoiled meat, the meals are very good and the recipes make me feel like a gourmet chef. The shipment this time was still icy, so I can only assume that the chicken was already spoiled when they shipped it. The only reason I mention their claim that the shipment would be in a refrigerated truck is because I really resent being lied to by them. Obviously, I cancelled my subscription once again and asked them to refund my money.

    • Hi Anita,

Sorry to hear and I will definitely forward the issues and concerns to Hello Fresh. Hello Fresh is great at resolving any issues that their customers may be having. Thank you for sharing! All the best 🙂

  2. Would like to give a gift certificate to my daughter. Do you offer that option and how would that work. Would I register her as the customer and can it be a one time trial option before signing up for program?
    Thank you , JC Brown

    • Hey JC,

Hello Fresh is a weekly subscription based meal delivery program. However, you can modify, pause, or cancel your delivery any time before 11:59PM PST 5 days prior to delivery. As far as the gift certificate, full value Gift cards are exempt from this policy, as they are a ‘one-off’ purchase. You can learn more about Hello Fresh Gift Cards options here at https://www.hellofresh.com/gift/ – Thanks!

We tried this service for two weeks. Our boxes looked nothing like what you described, there was no styrofoam box instead a thick plastic sheet was laid over the food and it wasn’t sealed, just draped. The first week there were no recipe cards included and several ingredients were left out of the meal boxes. My first call to try and resolve these issues was not handled well but I did finally reach someone who helped by crediting my account for the missing items. However that did not help when I was trying to fix the meal and had to send my husband to the store. We are now trying Home Chef, our first box comes today. I did enjoy the dishes from Hello Fresh, especially Jamie Oliver’s creations so that was a plus.

    • Hi Nancy,

Thank you for sharing your review with us. Hello Fresh is one of the best in the industry as far as customer service & satisfaction. However, I am glad to hear the problem was eventually resolve and that you enjoy the dishes. Keep us updated and let us know how it goes with the new service. Thanks! 🙂

We are on our 4th box. Overall we are quite pleased with HF although I do agree with some of the ‘cons’ mentioned. One box did have spoiled green beans (gross) but in all other cases the produce was fresh and tasted very natural. I’ve never seen any Styrofoam, but the plastic sheeting system seems to work ok, only once were the produce boxes warm upon arrival. Prep time is not as short or as easy as stated on the recipe cards, and it does take some patience if you’re not a gourmet cook already. But I do like to cook so that’s not a big deal. We like the variety, we like the different tastes. But we also agree that the portions seem a little small sometimes. This may be ok nutritionally, but not financially. We’re going to keep it going for a while.

    • Hi Michael,

Thank you for sharing your experience with us. I definitely agree with all meal delivery kits, prep time can be time consuming – especially when you are first starting out and/or have little cooking experience. However, it does get much better with time. Keep us updated! 🙂

  5. Just received my third box. I am really enjoying this service. It sounds like it will cost you more, but believe it or not, we are spending less. This is because, I no longer am stopping at the grocery store on my way home to pick up several ingredients and other stuff I didn’t need. I don’t know if it is the same for a family, but just me and my wife, this is great. I look forward to a very fresh meal that I did not have to plan, or shop for. In just a few meals, I have learned a few quick cooking tips that I can apply to other meals. An example of this is making an easy healthy salad dressing, rather than buying a pre-made one. Again, I don’t know about a whole family, but for the two of us this is great. I should add that the meals are big enough to fill you but not too big to overeat, which is exactly what I need. There are many options out there to get a free box or heavily discounted one. Give it a try and see for yourself. My biggest concern was that once you were signed up, they got you and it is a pain to cancel. I can sincerely say that it take s one click on a calendar to stop/start a delivery for that week and you can pick the day you want it delivered. I may sound like a plant for the company, but I am not. I have really enjoyed the fresh meals, the lack of shopping on the way, and the fact that I am eating healthy and not just cooking a frozen pizza instead. My wife has liked it cause we branched out and each things we normally would not have cooked.

  6. We’ve just started HF. On our 3rd week. Made sure the delivery day was a day I’m always home, so a cold and fresh box is never a problem. My husband and I love it. I have no issue with the process of chopping and cooking. My issue was always “trying something new” and fun without combing thru recipes and spending the time shooing for all the right ingredients without walking out of the store with more than I needed!
We feel like we’re at a restaurant trying something healthy and new every time we use the box. I just open a bottle of wine and we enjoy!! Way cheaper than eating out! My husband gets excited every time I tell him what’s in the box ready to happen! Definitely have to be open minded and have a man who understands portions and healthy food. So glad I do & so glad HF caters to people who enjoy eating this way:). And BTW. I have never received anything less than top quality. Produce AND meat. Packaged beautifully and ready to go!

Like others have stated, I too have received multiple boxes of spoiled food from Hello Fresh. Their packaging is nothing like you described. Only a cardboard box with cold packs in the bottom. Unfortunately, they are loose and shift so the meat is not always covered by the cold packs. Three times now my shipments have arrived so late that the cold packs are melted, the meat is warm to the touch & the veggies are also warm & sweat in their packages causing them to spoil. HF has not been helpful at all in resolving issues. I like the food, but until they correct their shipping problems, I’m done with HF.

  8. Whatever you do, don’t purchase a gift card for someone. I purchased a Classic Box gift card for my father as a birthday gift, and after he spent a ridiculous amount of time on the phone attempting to redeem the card, he finally gave up and asked Hello Fresh to refund my money to me. I paid an extra $10 above the actual price of a classic box because, I was told, it was more work to set up an account for one trial order, which a gift card essentially is. My father had to provide credit card information (even though he wasn’t to be charged for the order), provide his address twice (even though I provided when I ordered the card), he was met by extreme reluctance to send him only the one box, put on hold, disconnected, given a false name and extension, and it goes on. Must have been pretty bad for him to return his gift card! Very disappointing, Hello Fresh!

  9. Tried the veggie box…everything was very fresh. So I REALLY wanted to like this but after all three dinners were bland…I really had to doctor them to make them less boring. Then they were ok…but I found it just isn’t worth the prep time 🙁

  10. Hi there all!

I just signed up for Hello Fresh and I LOVE it! I’m finally cooking at home most nights instead of paying to go out for unhealthy prepared meals! I recommend it for sure. I used the code 86F7PB and even got $40 off my first box (code never expires, so you can too!) ^_^

    Happy cooking!
    Clare
